Our Journey to India

We are thrilled to share our exhilarating experience at the Enterprise Cross Learning and Training Workshop held in India from September 20th to 29th, 2023. 

During this transformative workshop, we immersed ourselves in discussions about solar-powered productive uses assembly from small-scale factors to large-scale industrial applications.

We explored how solar energy can revolutionize economic growth and sustainable development because Solar energy isn’t just a technology; it’s a catalyst for sustainable progress by advancing economic empowerment, environmental stewardship, and community well-being. 

Our interactions with professionals from various countries enriched our understanding and broadened our horizons. 

A heartfelt thank you to the organizers, Indian hosts, fellow participants and the vibrant culture that welcomed us. 

Lets continue to innovate, collaborate and drive positive change through the use of renewable energy alternatives like solar.

Ethiopian Military Veterans visit our Urban Agriculture Project in Prime Minister Compound.

Our urban agricultural project located in the Prime Minister office compound recently welcomed a group of Ethiopian Military Veteran, and these remarkable individuals, who once served our nation with unwavering dedication, now visiting our green site, their reactions were nothing short of heartwarming!

As they explored the greenery, they were inspired by the techniques and environmental actions we took which is empowering communities through organic farming. 

Their presence infused our organization with a sense of fulfillment and we are very happy for bringing a joy to our respected Veterans.

Let us continue to honor their service and find solace and purpose in nurturing our gardens and lands.

Urban Agriculture Pilot Project located in TARI (Tigray Agricultural Research Institute)

We are thrilled to announce the launch of our another Urban Agriculture Pilot Project located in TARI (Tigray Agricultural Research Institute)

This initiative is designed to empower young individuals to actively participate in sustainable food production, foster their awareness, increase their income source and drive positive change in our community.

In the face of recurring droughts in such areas like Tigray, our youths need to understand the power of urban agriculture. because Urban agriculture is not just about growing food; it is about resilience; edible landscapes, and the use of smart water-saving irrigation technologies.

Our project revolves around the energy and curiosity of our youths, they’re not just participants; they are co-creators of a greener future

SELCO training  Program.

On December 16, 2023, the SELCO training  Program, in collaboration with Precise Ethiopia organized a training for experts focused on solar installation.

Kirkos Woreda 2 Youth Center

We are excited to announce the launch of our new urban agricultural site called Kirkos Woreda 2 Youth Center. 

Our site is dedicated to providing fresh, locally-grown vegetables to our community. We believe that everyone should have access to healthy, nutritious food, and we are committed to making that a reality with our women-inclusive teams.

We are appreciative of every team and these women's unwavering efforts putting themselves in hours of labor starting from today's site-clearing stage until the future task of controlling the overall site management.

Thus, we consider it an honor to collaborate with the selected youths for implementing this astonishing pilot project and we are eager to celebrate their contribution when the project is done and become their sustainable income source.
 

Presentation on forestry seedling and its related topics.

On Dec. 6, 2023 Dr. Yigardu Mulatu and Dr. Mehari Alebachew from Ethiopian Forestry Development(EFD) gave us a meaningful presentation in their office about Forestry seedling and its related topics.

We found the presentation incredibly informative and thought-provoking. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and expertise with us.

Vermicomposting

Are you passionate about the environment and sustainability? If so, then we are pleased to introduce you to one of the very environmentally sustainable composting method called “Vermicomposting” 

It is the process of using worms to break down organic waste into nutrient-rich compost. It’s an eco-friendly way to reduce waste and create a valuable resource for plantation. Solarvillage promotes the production of organic plants with the use of this composting system.

Visit with Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahido Church Development and Inter-Church Aid Commission (EOCDIAC)

On Nov 21, 2023 , We had a successful field visit with Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahido Church Development And Inter-Church Aid Commission(EOC-DICAC)  in the Prime Minister Office Compound and it was an amazing chance! We were able to show so much about our experience in the urban agricultural sector and how it is making a difference in the community.

Dialogue with representatives of ethio resource group and consult international PLC.

Solarvillage conducted a meaningful dialogue  with Mr. Hilawe lakew (from ethio resource group) and Mr. Henok Tsegaye( Analyst from Precise consult international PLC) On Nov 15,2023.

The discussion points were on the topic of what does the overall feasibility of solar technology products local assembly and manufacturing system seems in Ethiopia, what value do they add on the existing scenario of the solar market, the challenges  we are facing, what actions and mitigation measures should be taken on the way to enhance and promote the use of these technologies.

Discussion with Holeta Agriculture Institute. 

On Nov 13th, 2023 The "Holeta Agricultural research institute" and "Solar village Ethiopia" held a productive discussion on the precondition and a way to go forward about the implementation of solar and urban agricultural systems in the research centers. 

The discussion took place among representatives  from the two organizations Dr. Gemechu Keneni (lead researcher), Dr. Tesfaye Abebe (Senior researcher), Mr. Yohanis Getachew (Solar energy expert) and from solar village Mr. Tiglu Tesfaye(Agriculture and irrigation department head).

On Nov 8, We conducted a brief discussion meeting with GIZ, Dr. Macben Makenzie (regional coordinator for sun4water program) and Mr. Kirubel (junior Agricultural expert) mentioned important points about the existing works of solarvillage and related issues in the solar sector.

Technical Workshop Training

On November 1 and 2, GIZ conducted two days of technical workshop training in the Haile Grand Hotel in Addis Ababa. 

The training held significance for Solar Village. And it brought together a range of solar industry players working in the sector.

Application of urban agriculture system in Prime Minister's Compound

We are delighted to share with you one of our work experiences in the prime minister's office compound. 

It's an integrated urban agricultural system that contains seedlings, plantations, hydroponics, fish ponding, vermi-warm composting, and solar-powered watering systems.

Exhibition at International Livestock Research Institute

Solar Village took part in an exhibition event at the ILRI (International Livestock Research Institute) on October25,2023. 

This event was prepared by the Ministry of Agriculture in collaboration with the Ministry of Irrigation and Lowlands and the World Food Program. 

We were able to establish networks, exchange experiences, and enhance our reputation particularly in the solar industry. The event participants, who came from a variety of institutions and backgrounds, also expressed their appreciation and thoughts to us in abundance. We are thrilled to be a part of this significant event.

Seedling Center

Our nursery site is located at 4 Killo(tiyit bet) with 3 rooms, sowing, germination and hardening room.

We have both hybrid and local vegetables available.  Hybrids include head cabbages(both red &green), Cauliflowers, broccoli. The local vegetables are kale (habesha gomen), tomato, Zucchini, cucumber, swischard, and lettuce.
What sets us apart is that we have a highly qualified professional with many years of experience who works to improve the product's quality.

We deliver organic, disease-resistant, high-yielding, healthful types at the lowest possible cost (3birr per plant).

All of our plants are entirely organic (free of any pesticides).

In general, we are a mission-driven company that seeks to give back to society since we think there is a significant need for plantations and a deficiency in food security. Therefore, we work hard to close the gap and to make it available to anyone with an affordable price.

Urban Agriculture Project in Schools

Implementing urban agricultural projects in school environments have a significant impact on students health and academic performance. 

Recent study shows that Urban agricultural foods are rich in nutrients which can help improve brain function and enhance learning capacity. For example, leafy greens such as spinach and kale are rich in vitamin K, which has been shown to improve cognitive function.

By engaging students in the process, we hope to inspire the next generation with a critical mindset to conserve, protect, and create a more sustainable environment.

Participation on presentation by UNICEF team on sustainable youth-led urban food system

On March 22, our company had an engaging presentation for the UNICEF teams on Sustainable Youth-Led Urban Food Systems.

A key component of urban agriculture is sustainability, particularly when putting schemes into action.

In our presentation, SolarVillage highlighted the vital role that youth play in the establishment and advancement of a sustainable urban food system in the Addis Ababa city administration youth and sport bureau project sites.

UNICEF recognizes the need for an urban food and nutrition agenda that prioritizes youths and children and We suggested important action that can be performed, pertinent activities, strategies, and our encouraging prior practices are all outlined in our roadmap. 

In conclusion, sustainability in urban agriculture project sites fosters healthier communities, empowers people to actively participate in the creation of a more resilient and sustainable future.

Empowering youth in central Ethiopia Region, Butajira Town

Solar village is committed to building a brighter future by training young technicians came from ADRA Ethiopia NGO.

Our dedicated team is working to equip these enthusiastic youths with the skills they need to make a difference in their community Because Access to clean water is essential for thriving communities, and solar pumps play a crucial role in providing reliable water sources. 

Their commitment during the training was inspiring and they got practical skills (including solar pump installation, maintenance and troubleshooting).

Empowering Small Holder Farmers

Get to know our incredible farmers, As they look at the water flow by the solar-powered water pump we installed, their faces beam with happiness and joy. 

For years, these farmers have been carefully farming their land. However, getting enough water was never easy even though, some of them uses diesel pump, it's maintenance cost, pollution to the env't and fuel shortage was a critical problem but thanks to solar technologies, their world has now changed, they are no longer concerned about a shortage of water. 

The pump now draws water from the earth's depths to fulfill the hunger of the soil, Crops flourish and leafy greens sway gratefully when they receive regular irrigation. 

The area that used to always wait for rain now produces abundance all year round. This demonstrates Solar village's  commitment to support those small holder farmers.

Empowering Tigray Region Through Sustainable Urban Agriculture

Solar Village, we’re thrilled to share our passion for sustainable development and social responsibility. Our recent urban agricultural projects in the Tigray region in TARI compound are becoming real. 

Our team has successfully installed solar-powered water pumps, harnessing the abundant Tigray's sunshine to provide reliable irrigation for urban agriculture project. 

Also we’ve implemented efficient drip irrigation systems for 2000m² area which pond is the water source.

We’re also investing in onsite training programs that equip local women and youth with essential solar powered pump and drip irrigation installation technics including agricultural skills. 

Solar village believes, empowering youths fosters, economic growth, job opportunities and community resilience. 

Solar Village continues its support for the successful implementation of this project.

!On May 22-23, 2024 our organization participated in the Global South-South Summit, a prestigious event that brought together experts, innovators, and change-makers from around the world.  

From the Exhibition Highlights, Our booth showcased our solar powered products, and urban agricultural practices. visitors were captivated by its potential impact on food security and agricultural product enhancement. 

Distinguished guests, including representatives from international NGOs, government agencies, and private enterprises, graced our exhibition. Their enthusiasm and interest in our work were truly inspiring. 

The summit featured keynote speeches and thought-provoking panel discussions on different topics.
